Former world boxing champion in eight weight classes, 42-year-old Filipino Manny Pacquiao announced on September 19 that he will run for president of the Philippines. This was announced by the CNA TV channel.

The famous boxer said that “the time has come to take up the challenge.” He also assured that “he will always be a fighter in the ring and outside it.”

Pacquiao was nominated by a group of representatives of the ruling party “NDP – Laban” (“Philippine Democratic Party – People’s Power”), which conflicts with the incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte.

The NDP-Laban group, loyal to the head of state, offered Senator Christopher Go, Duterte’s closest aide, to run, but he has not yet agreed.

In addition, the daughter of the incumbent president Sarah Duterte-Carpio, who is the mayor of Davao, may become a serious rival for Pacquiao.

As noted by CNA, Duterte-Carpio has the highest level of support among possible candidates, but she has not yet decided to participate in the elections.

Manny Pacquiao is one of the most titled boxers of our time. In particular, he is the only boxer at the moment who has won championship titles in eight weight categories.

Pacquiao has fought over 70 fights, the last of them in August 2021.

Since 2007, Pacquiao has been active in politics, in 2010 he was first elected to the Congress of the Philippines since 2016 – a member of the Senate.

The presidential elections in the Philippines will be held in 2022. Duterte cannot run for a second term under the Philippine constitution, but he announced his intention to run for vice president.

According to the Associated Press, Pacquiao criticized the Duterte administration for the increase in the level of corruption in the Philippines.

The Boxer believes that the difficulties he has experienced in life will help to better understand human suffering and fight poverty and corruption.
